Scotland. Held at Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museum. Glass has a long history as a decorative material. Its translucence and almost jewel like quality, when coloured or decorated, has fascinated collectors and connoisseurs for centuries. Riihimäki, Finland. Held at the Finnish Museum of Glass. The Finnish Glass Museum has staged the Finnish Glass Lives exhibitions, documenting the glass industry of Finland, on five previous occasions, in 1986, 1990, 1995, 2000 and 2005. Finnish Glass Lives includes a catalogue listing exhibitions and other important glass-related events from the preceding five years and in-cluding illustrations of recent glass products and works of glass art. Kansas City, MO. Exhibit explores recent pieces by three of the leading artists working in glass today. Collaborating with workshops on the island of Murano, a historic glass-making center in Venice, these artists have broken with tradition to produce unexpected forms, effects and moods. Visually dazzling and compelling, some pieces include abstracted brilliant cityscapes, while others are more contemplative and evocative of the watery city of Venice. Fayetteville, NC. Explore the intricate technical process through an exhibition of glass work both hand-blown and fractured. Glassblowing involves three furnaces. The first, which contains a crucible of molten glass, is simply referred to as "the furnace." The second is called the "glory hole", and is used to reheat a piece in between steps of working with it. The final furnace is called the "lehr" or "annealer", and is used to slowly cool the glass, over a period of a few hours to a few days. Corning, NY. At the Corning Museum of Glass. This exhibit will include a selection of Louis Comfort Tiffany’s blown glass, designed by Tiffany and made at his glasshouse in Corona, New York between about 1895 and 1920. He gave the glass the name “Favrile”, which was derived from the old English “fabrile” meaning hand-wrought. These blown glass pieces, many of which were iridescent as well as irregular in form, became popular with the public very quickly and inspired many other glass designers. Corning, NY. Held at the Corning Museum of Glass. The phrase “medieval glass” evokes images of stained glass windows. But there is another world of medieval glass: objects made for daily use. Jun 5 -13: From the Earth to the Fire and Back
Pittsburgh, PA. In honor of Pittsburgh's designation as the North American host city for the United Nations' World Environment Day on June 5, Pittsburgh Glass Center will host a local juried exhibition of artwork. Tacoma WA. Held at the Museum of Glass. Information at museumofglass.orgOct 23 - Sep 6 2011: Glimmering Gone: Beth Lipman and Ingalena Klenell
Tacoma WA. Held at the Museum of Glass. Klenell and Lipman have taught and lectured collaboratively in Italy, Sweden, and the United States, but this exhibition marks their first artistic collaboration. Elements for the exhibition will be created both individually in their respective studios and together during a Visiting Artist residency in the Museum’s Hot Shop in January, 2010. From this, a new body of work will emerge, combining kiln-formed, blown and sculpted glass in a sequence of installations, which engage the visitor in most unusual settings.
